Daily Mail: Villagers spend 24 hours helping rescue 40ft Polish truck which got trapped on a country lane after driver followed sat nav

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

An entertaining report from the Daily Mail:

One wrong turning became a 24-hour rescue mission after a hapless Polish lorry driver followed his sat-nav into a dead end.
He had ignored signs warning that the road was not suitable for HGVs and got the 40ft wagon stuck on a tight bend.
A team of around ten workers from a specialist recovery team then spent more than 15 hours digging out earth from the side of the road to ease it free.

Lobby your MP

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary Norman Baker has tabled an Early Day Motion calling for urgent action to protect communities from poor sat-nav routing.

The Parliamentary motion calls for the Government to regulate sat-navs to ensure that they take into account the height, width and length of the vehicle before selecting a route. If the Government adopts the idea, this could mean an end to sat-navs mistakenly directing lorries down unsuitable roads.

You can help by asking your MP to sign Norman Baker’s motion, Early Day Motion 1252 ‘Satellite Navigation Devices’, to show his or her support for the campaign.

SAT NAV technology designed to make life easier for drivers is making life harder for rural people.

People living in towns and villages near Winchester are complaining that satellite navigation systems are misdirecting drivers onto unsuitable roads.

There are a growing number of reports of lorries getting stuck on tight corners and narrow country lanes.

One village in the Meon Valley, Exton has erected a sign asking drivers to turn off their satnav systems.

Sat navs tell drivers the quickest route but many systems do not take into account the suitability of the local roads.

Now Alresford town councillor Mark Luckham is launching a campaign to minimise the problem.
